Sawasdee ka Marcia and say hello tp all Music teachers who joined the course together at NIST....Bot and Me are starting Art & MUsic summer course at the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts from 20th April until 7th May.
I hope we will meet all again.hugs ,Tag!
Hi Marcia -- Well, I am taking time off by not renewing my contract at UNIS and not seeking employment at other international schools for next year. I knew I was going to leave UNIS at the end of this year, and originally planned on seeking other work. I had expressions of interest from American School in Taipei, JIS, ISB in Bangkok, NIST, the Hague and several other schools, but when I sat down to think about it I realized that I need some time away from daily classroom teaching. I love music education so much that after 13 years of doing it to the best of my ability, I thought it was time I recharge. I don't want to get burnt out. In fact, when one of the kids asked me why I was going to stop teaching for awhile I replied, "Because if I keep teaching I might not like you so much anymore!" They all laughed.
Anyway, when I first started teaching I promised my self that I would take a sabbatical when the time is right and that time is now. I have no debt and no real responsibilities. I have enough money saved so it won't hurt my pocketbook too much, and if i don't do it now I might not ever. I am planning on cycle touring through as much of the world as I can, studying music, and also exploring other career options (such as visiting teaching, consulting, and cycle tour leading)
So, to make a long story short, that is how I am taking some time off. I'd love to come visit. I feel as though I could offer some quality education to your students and also some strong PD for teachers (both teaching and non-teaching as well). However, my experience in guest instructing and leading PD in limited to about two years. In view of that, I think a 200.00 per day stipend plus travel expenses would be fair. This is what NIST paid me for my time with them earlier this academic year (much less than Doug and Kofi). I would be happy to stay with you, and in fact, would probably prefer that to a hotel.
I am free as of June 17 of this year. I am currently in the process of putting together a calendar of activities beginning in July and would be happy to schedule in a visit to Hong Kong when it suits both of us. I don't plan on having a solidly fixed schedule for several months so there is plenty of time to negotiate. Also, I assume that both you and your administration would want an outline of what I would do with both students and staff, so if you gave me specifics on what you were looking for I could prepare that for you.
Please stay in touch and good luck with the stepping! You can send the PDF directly to my email address if you would like. teampeacedove@gmail.com
Hi Marcia -- I would be happy to help with Stepping. I haven't heard of the Jim Solomon book, so go ahead and send the PDF. I'll take a look. If you use some of the stepping sequences I posted on the video section of the EARCOS site (from Doug) I would stay away from the 'home' sequence at first. Go with the second and third one to start out. They are easier for kids to grasp.
Also, simple body percussion is a good way to get into it. I am guessing you have already done some of this, and it sounds like you are also using speech rhythms, which is great. I make sure that students leave the session being able to say the rhythms. 'Dung' for steps and 'Tak for everything else.
Let me know what else I can to help. As far as possible coming out there -- funny you should ask. I am taking some time off from teaching next academic year and putting together a year of cycle touring and music study. This means that, as of now, I am VERY free as of June 15th. If you are interested in setting something up, please let me know.
Hi Marcia! No, I'm not in the States. But I am engaged and moving to Singapore to teach K - 4 general music and Grade 5 beginning strings at SAS. :) I'm really excited (we're getting married this June...he already works at SAS) and am a little freaked about strings, but I know I can make it work. I'm practicing violin, viola, cello, and double bass!!! I really wanted the choir position, but strings was the only option so it was meant to be. I'm bummed to be leaving Manila but excited for a change and new adventure at the same time. What's new with you? Any good workshops coming up? I heard EARCOS will be in Manila next year! Hugs, ~Anna

Hi Marcia,
I was happy to meet you, too - I will try to get Skype figured out so I can Skype you. You sparked all kinds of ideas in my little brain . . . I've been teaching my kids the 'Salaam Aleikum' from Kofi and they love it, but not as much as Bamba Ramba Tumba - they were groovin' and movin' and singing in four parts - too bad I couldn't play the syncopated drum part with it (YET). What a great workshop that was! Deb
