Today I took the United Nations International School step team, ‘Dragonfly,’ to the New International School in Bangkok Thailand (NIST). While we were there we performed for over 1,000 students and gave student led workshops to grades 7 through 10. It was a smashing success! The UNIS students gave stellar performances, and the NIST students were a great audience -- and great workshop participants!
Stepping is a bit like South African gumboot dancing and came of age in American university sororities and fraternities during the 1980’s. It’s very aggressive and highly choreographed, and students love it. It’s loud, fast and furious! Our experience at NIST was so positive that we are hoping both schools can get together again next year for a bit of a ‘step off’. I am considering trying to organize this with other EARCOS schools as well. If anyone out there is interested, can you please let me know?
Also, looking forward to seeing many of you at the workshop with Kofi and Doug Goodkin at NIST next September. These two are wonderful, and we are luck to be able to have the chance to work with them! I may be doing some stepping workshops with the NIST students at an 'arts week' at NIST immediately following,. Nothing is set in stone yet, however.
