Profile Information

About Me:
I am a musician, songwriter, singer, teacher and cyclist. I believe that all people have music inside of them and that one of the greatest joys is to realize this through the experience of making music with others. I am currently helping people do this through the medium of teaching, although I have still have some strong reservation about the whole concept of 'school.' I have been working at international schools for seven years, first in Lao and now in Vietnam.

I actively write and perform my own music both in Hanoi and occasionally back in the US. I record occasionally and have one self produced CD available. It is called 'Organic.'

I am becoming more and more interested in the concepts present in Orff Schulwerk and am incorporating these ideas more and more into my teaching. Specifically I am looking for ways to do this with older students and adults.

My website is www.teampeacedove.org and is geared towards incorporating my love of music, cycling and education. It is not really up and running at the moment so don't go rush to see it! However, if any one out there as any ideas on how to incorporate these three I would love to hear them!

BT Dance Project visits UNIS Hanoi -- Fantastic!

Just this last week, Esther Baker-Tarpaga and her husband, Olivier Tarpaga (along with their gorgeous little girl, Windiga), the two founders of BT Dance Project, visited UNIS, Hanoi for a week filled with rhythm and dance from West Africa. Olivier is fabulous djembe player and dancer from Burkina Faso and Esther is a dancer and choreographer from the US who did her master's work in Sengalese hip hop. The two worked with students of all ages and performed at two assemblies on Friday with our mid… Continue

EARCOS 2009, Use of This Site, Leaving South East Asia.

Hello all -- A couple of quick comments on the EARCOS teacher's conference, use of the this site, and my departure from Asia.

EARCOS -- although I didn't attend the conference this year (officially) I did catch the last day as I was visiting a friend in Borneo. The location was spectacular, and the couple of environmentally related workshops I attended were quite inspirational. There was not much in the way of music, although I do believe one of our members presented on the importance of being… Continue

David, HOW are you taking off some time? I so want to do that to further my music research in S.E. Asia and can't figure out how to get permission to do this. It's probably the institution I'm working in....

Having said that, how much would you charge a day. You could stay with us if you don't mind. That would make it easier for us to afford it. Let's stay in touch. Please give me the dates you'll have some time. I'll send you the PDF from school tomorrow.

David, I am wondering if you would help me with 4 basic steps to get me started with a little stepping with my 2nd graders. We have done one of the rhythms in Jim Solomon's Body Rondo book, saying it and using hands and sounds. Now I would like for them to work on some basic stepping to add to this. Do you happen to have this book? If not, if you agree to this, I'll send you a pdf of the piece we are doing. Would LOVE to have you come and work with our kids at some point! Something else to talk about. Thanks, m

David, thank you so much for support while I was in Thailand. I really appreciate all that you are doing to "up" the music level in Asia. You were so kind and helpful to me while I was in B'kok. I really appreciated your inclusiveness. You ROCK, David.
big hugs, m

Hi David! It was awesome orff-in it up with you again. :)
How did your workshops with the kids go? I wish I could have seen you with them. Oh, and my flight was delayed 5 hours, so had I known, I could have! Boo. Oh well. Next time! :)
I've never done stepping but imagine it would be something I would enjoy learning!
Have a great rest of the week.
~Anna
